Notes
This publisher was registered as Scanlen’s Food and Confectionery Co. Ltd., trading as “Hollywood Comics.” Government Gazette of the State of New South Wales (Sydney, NSW: 1901-2001), 11 December 1959, p. 3827 (viewed 18 Jun 2022, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article220310435).
From 1963 until the mid 1990s, Scanlens was a dominant force in bubble-gum trading cards, including many products with comic characters.
Hollywood Comics publications were printed by Donald Ross Rankin and distributed by H.G. Watson Pty Ltd. (262 Grant Street, South Melbourne). Kevin Patrick notes:
'Donald Ross Rankin (1914-1991) served with the Royal Australian Air Force between 1941-1945. Donald Ross Rankin (94 Market Street, Essendon) is also listed as the printer and publisher of the Sporting Globe newspaper, on behalf of the Herald and Weekly Times Ltd newspaper group, during the early-to-mid-1950s.
'…Classified newspaper advertisements from the Argus newspaper (Melbourne) dated 24 July 1954 feature listings from H.G. Watson Pty. Ltd. (373 Queen Street, Melbourne) seeking applicants for wholesale confectionery salesman and a driver for a country confectionery cash van. It's entirely possible that H.G. Watson was responsible for distributing Buffalo Bill Jr (and other Hollywood Comics titles) direct to confectionery retailers and newsagents which also carried Scanlens confectionery products.'
