The New Idea

The New Idea for Women (Southdown Press, 1951? series) has been grouped as part of a series of titles with continued numbering.

T. K. Fitchett launched The New Idea - A Woman's Home Journal for Australasia in October 1902. The magazine was renamed Everylady's Journal in 1911, but reverted to its original title in 1928 (https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/new-idea-magazine/).

The New Idea began serialising Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (by Philip Francis Nolan and Dick Calkins) in the 17 April 1936 cover-dated issue. The magazine compiled a weeks worth of Buck Rogers episodes as a two-page weekly instalment. It subsequently launch a spin-off magazine The Adventures of Buck Rogers in November 1936.

The exact timing of the change of publisher name from Fitchett Brothers to Southdown Press is unknown, but probably after World War II when Keith Murdoch acquired the company from its founders. The publisher was later renamed Pacific Magazines and Printing (PMP) in 1991.

The New Idea included episodes of Red Ryder comic strip, as well as the Australian strip Rory McShane/Sky Hawk by Terry Murphy.
